As a watch lover and collector, there’s something special about the timepieces that stand the test of time and manage to capture both style and craftsmanship. Among these coveted treasures, the Omega Seamaster Chronograph ‘Big Blue,’ (reference 176.004), stands prominent, particularly for those of us who admire vintage watches. I have always wanted to own one of these watches, but I have never been lucky enough to find one at the right time in my life at the right money and be able to complete the transaction to add it to the collection.

Initially, this iconic watch was released in the 1970s, this watch is not just a timekeeper; it tells a story steeped in Omega’s rich history, making it a sought-after piece for collectors today. First released during the era of diving and sports watches, the Omega Seamaster Chronograph was crafted for those who appreciate functionality alongside aesthetics. Looking back at the watch now, we can see plenty of modern watches that have taken their inspiration from this reference, and I am sure we could all name a few of them.

The ‘Big Blue’ nickname perfectly encapsulates its defining feature: the striking blue dial that commands attention. This vibrant dial contrasts beautifully with the sub-dials, which are contrasting blue and black, allowing for easy readability—a hallmark of Omega’s design philosophy.

One of my favourite features of the ‘Big Blue’ is its chronograph function. The watch is equipped with the Calibre 1040 movement, a tried-and-tested chronograph movement renowned for its reliability and accuracy. For collectors, this movement is a delight, as it perfectly marries Omega’s quality craftsmanship with the practicalities that a chronograph provides. The ability to time events, track splits, or simply enjoy watching the seconds tick away adds an interactive element to wearing this watch.

Another notable aspect is its unique case design. The ‘Big Blue’ features a distinctive cushion-shaped case that diverges from the more traditional round designs seen in many watches. This bold choice, paired with a 44mm size which for the time of release was virtually unheard off, provides a robust presence on the wrist without being overwhelmingly large. It’s a perfect balance for collectors looking for a watch that screams vintage and stands out but also remains wearable in everyday settings.

The watch’s water resistance, typical of the Seamaster lineage, is another reason collectors have a soft spot for it. The massive steel case was produced by the case manufacturer Ervin Piquerez SA in Bassecourt, Switzerland (also referred to as EPSA, and known for creating Super Compressor diving cases for Jaeger-LeCoultre and other prominent Swiss watch manufacturers). The screw-down caseback and crown, and the appropriately fitted pushers allowed the watch to function properly underwater up to 120 meters, making it a versatile companion for both daily wear and adventurous endeavours. Whether diving into the ocean or simply enjoying a rainy day, the ‘Big Blue’ provides reassurance that it can handle whatever life throws your way.

In summary, the Omega Seamaster Chronograph ‘Big Blue’ (reference 176.004) is a quintessential timepiece that resonates deeply with watch lovers and collectors alike. Its striking aesthetic, practical chronograph features, historical significance, and robust design make it a must-have for anyone passionate about vintage waves and intricate engineering.

As collectors continue to seek out remarkable pieces, the ‘Big Blue’ is sure to hold its place in the pantheon of iconic timepieces, cherished by enthusiasts both old and new. If you haven’t yet experienced the ‘Big Blue,’ I highly encourage you to explore its charm and elegance—it just might captivate you just as it has for countless others.

There are not many untouched examples of this reference now and I have seen prices in the past be as low at £2,500 and as high as £5,000 but if your lucky enough to find one, just remember, you want it to be as close to as original as you can to ensure it maintains it charm and desire. Happy hunting and if you do find one and manage to secure it on your wrist and in your collection then please send us a picture as I never get bored of seeing this striking time piece.
