Who designed the Royal Oak?
The Royal Oak was designed by legendary watch designer Gerald Genta, who sketched the concept overnight before its launch at Baselworld.
His inspiration reportedly came from old-fashioned diving helmets, which explains the exposed screws and industrial feel of the bezel. The result was something completely different from the dress watches dominating luxury watchmaking in the early 1970s.
Angular. Bold. Sporty.
And decades later, it still looks modern.
That’s the sign of great design.
Why the Royal Oak was revolutionary
Before the Royal Oak, luxury watches followed a fairly predictable formula. Precious metals, slim dress cases, and traditional styling dominated the market.
The Royal Oak broke every rule.
Audemars Piguet essentially created the luxury sports watch category as we know it today. The combination of brushed steel finishing, integrated bracelet design, and high-end mechanical watchmaking changed the industry permanently.
Without the Royal Oak, watches like the Patek Philippe Nautilus or even modern luxury sports watches probably wouldn’t exist in the same way. That’s how influential it was.
The Royal Oak dial and bracelet design
Two things instantly define a Royal Oak.
The bezel. And the bracelet.
The octagonal bezel with exposed screws became iconic almost overnight, but the finishing is what truly separates the watch from most others. The mixture of brushed surfaces and polished edges gives the Royal Oak a level of detail that photographs rarely capture properly.
Then there’s the dial. The signature “Tapisserie” pattern adds texture and depth without feeling overdesigned. It’s subtle, but instantly recognisable to anyone who knows watches.
And the bracelet? Still one of the best in the industry.
The Audemars Piguet Calibre 2121 movement
The original Royal Oak used the Calibre 2121, an ultra-thin automatic movement based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 ébauche.
At just 3.05mm thick, it was one of the thinnest automatic movements of its era and allowed the Royal Oak to stay slim despite its sporty design.
That balance mattered.
The watch felt luxurious without becoming bulky, which was a huge part of its appeal. Audemars Piguet wasn’t just building something bold visually, they were backing it up with serious watchmaking credibility underneath the dial.
Why is the Royal Oak so hard to buy?
Simple.
Demand massively outweighs supply.
Modern Royal Oak models are among the most sought-after watches in the world, especially stainless steel versions and limited complications. Waiting lists at authorised dealers can stretch for years, and some models trade far above retail price on the secondary market. Certain rare references now regularly sell for six-figure sums.
That exclusivity only adds to the appeal.
Because whether people admit it or not, scarcity drives desire.
Why celebrities love the Royal Oak
The Royal Oak has become much more than a watch. It’s a cultural icon.
Everyone from Jay-Z and LeBron James to athletes, actors, musicians, and entrepreneurs have worn one. But unlike some luxury watches, the Royal Oak works almost anywhere.
Suit. T-shirt. Red carpet. Holiday. It somehow fits all of them.
That versatility is a huge reason why it continues to dominate modern watch culture.
Why the Royal Oak divides opinion
Here’s the interesting thing.
Not everyone falls in love with the Royal Oak immediately.
In fact, for some collectors (including myself) it’s a watch that creates a strange mix of admiration and nervousness. The sharp lines, high values, and sheer presence on the wrist make it a watch you respect before you fully understand.
But that’s also why it matters.
Great watches often divide opinion. They challenge expectations. And the Royal Oak has been doing exactly that since 1972.
Is the Royal Oak worth the hype?
Honestly… yes.
Not because it’s expensive. Not because celebrities wear it. But because very few watches genuinely changed the direction of the industry.
The Royal Oak did.
And even if you never plan to own one, it’s impossible not to appreciate what it represents when you see one on the wrist. It’s one of those watches that instantly tells you the person wearing it understands horology.
At The Watch Experts, we love watches that changed the industry. Pieces with genuine history, incredible design, and the kind of presence you can feel the second they hit the wrist.
Whether you’re searching for your first luxury sports watch or adding something iconic to the collection, we’ll help you find the right piece.
