The Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop launch is Everywhere

Since Audemars Piguet and Swatch officially launched the Royal Pop collection on the 16th May 2026, social media has been flooded with opinions, queue photos, resale listings, and collectors arguing over whether it’s genius or complete madness.

Which probably means the collaboration has worked perfectly.

Because whether you love it or hate it, everyone is talking about it right now.

And honestly… I think that’s rare in modern watchmaking.

Why the AP x Swatch Royal Pop created so much hype

The hype started building weeks before release day.

The moment teaser images and early leaks started circulating online, people immediately compared it to the MoonSwatch frenzy. But this time it felt even more unexpected because Audemars Piguet has always sat in a very different part of the luxury market.

The Royal Oak isn’t just another sports watch. As we discussed in last weeks blog.

For many collectors, it’s untouchable. Aspirational. A watch that represents proper high-end horology. So seeing AP connected to a playful Swatch collaboration instantly divided opinion.

Then release day arrived…And the queues were huge.

Across major cities, people lined up early hoping to get their hands on one of the most talked-about watch releases of the year. Some stores reportedly struggled with crowd control as the demand massively outweighed supply, and within hours resale listings were already appearing online at heavily inflated prices.

It’s the MoonSwatch story all over again; just with an even more controversial watch at the centre of it.

What is the AP x Swatch Royal Pop?

This is where things get interesting.

Instead of creating a smaller or more affordable Royal Oak-style wristwatch, Swatch and AP have gone in a completely different direction. The Royal Pop leans heavily into pocket-watch styling, mixing playful design with recognisable Royal Oak-inspired details.

That decision has surprised a lot of people.

Because let’s be honest… pocket watches are not exactly dominating modern fashion right now. Most people probably haven’t worn one in their life.

But that’s also why the release feels fresh.

The watch industry has become very safe recently. Another steel sports watch. Another integrated bracelet. Another black dial. The Royal Pop at least is trying to do something different, and whether you love the execution or not, that deserves some credit.

Can you actually wear the Royal Pop on your wrist?

Not officially.

The original concept centres around the pocket-watch design, which has frustrated some buyers who were expecting a more traditional wearable sports watch experience. Unsurprisingly, aftermarket companies are already offering custom conversion kits and modified cases for people who want to strap theirs onto the wrist.

Personally, I’m not sure that’s the point.

The unusual format is exactly what makes the Royal Pop interesting. It feels playful, slightly ridiculous, and very self-aware, all things the luxury watch industry probably needs a bit more of.

And honestly, I quite like the fact it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Why the Royal Pop is dividing collectors

This collaboration has exposed a very clear split in the watch world.

Some collectors absolutely love seeing brands experiment and bring new people into the hobby. Others think collaborations like this dilute the exclusivity and heritage associated with brands like Audemars Piguet.

And I understand both sides.

The Royal Oak has always been a bit of a nemesis watch for me personally. I massively respect the history, the finishing, and what it represents in watchmaking, but it’s also a watch that makes me slightly nervous every time I handle one.

That said…

I can’t deny how beautiful they look on the wrist. And seeing AP lean into something playful and unexpected with the Royal Pop is genuinely fascinating to watch unfold in real time.

Will the AP x Swatch Royal Pop hold its value?

That’s already becoming the big conversation online.

The early resale listings we’re seeing are pushing well beyond retail pricing, with certain examples being advertised at several times their original cost only days after launch. Whether those prices hold long term is impossible to know right now.

Personally, I think this release would have reached an even bigger audience if it had launched as a traditional wristwatch rather than a pocket-watch-inspired piece.

But maybe that’s exactly why it’s generating so much discussion.

It’s unusual. Different. Slightly unexpected.

And collectors always react strongly to watches that break the rules.

What the Royal Pop says about modern watch culture

My biggest takeaway from this release isn’t really the watch itself.

It’s what it says about where the industry is heading.

Collaborations now drive attention in a way traditional launches often struggle to achieve. They bring new buyers into the hobby, create cultural moments, and push brands into conversations far outside normal watch circles.

And I think that’s powerful.

And whether collectors love these collaborations or completely reject them, they’re becoming a major part of modern watch culture.

Should luxury watches be fun again?

Honestly… yes.

Not every watch release needs to be ultra-serious Swiss perfection wrapped in heritage marketing. Sometimes watches should simply make people smile, spark conversation, and feel enjoyable to wear.

The Royal Pop absolutely does that.

Would I wear one every day? Probably not.

Would I happily wear one with summer clothes and a waistcoat because it’s a bit different and a bit fun? Absolutely.

And maybe that’s exactly what the watch was designed for in the first place.
