Does watch size really matter?
In a word…
Yes.
You can have the most beautiful watch in the world, but if it doesn’t sit comfortably on your wrist, you’ll probably end up leaving it in the watch box.
The good news is there’s no such thing as the perfect watch size.
Only the perfect watch size for you.
Why case diameter isn’t the whole story
Most people immediately look at the case diameter.
38mm.
40mm.
42mm.
It’s an easy number to compare, but it only tells part of the story.
Two watches with exactly the same case size can wear completely differently. The shape of the lugs, the thickness of the case, the size of the bezel and even the bracelet all affect how a watch feels on the wrist.
That’s why trying a watch on is always better than judging it from a specification sheet.
The importance of lug-to-lug length
If there’s one measurement more people should pay attention to, it’s the lug-to-lug distance.
This is the measurement from the top of one lug to the bottom of the other, and it has a huge impact on how a watch wears.
As a general rule, the lugs shouldn’t overhang your wrist. If they do, the watch can feel oversized even if the case diameter looks sensible on paper.
It’s one of the first things we look at when helping customers choose a watch.
What size watch suits a smaller wrist?
If your wrist measures around 6 to 6.5 inches, you’ll probably find yourself most comfortable in the 36mm to 39mm range.
That doesn’t mean you can’t wear something larger.
It simply means proportions become more important.
Many vintage watches were 36mm, and they still look fantastic today. In fact, there’s been a real shift back towards smaller case sizes over the last few years as collectors rediscover the elegance and comfort of more traditional proportions.
Sometimes, less really is more.
What size watch suits an average wrist?
If your wrist is around 6.5 to 7.25 inches, you’re in luck.
Almost everything is available to you.
This is where watches between 39mm and 41mm tend to shine. They offer enough presence without feeling oversized, making them ideal everyday watches.
It’s no coincidence that so many modern sports watches sit right in this range.
Brands have realised it works for the vast majority of collectors.
What if you have a larger wrist?
If your wrist measures 7.5 inches or above, you’ll often find 41mm to 44mm watches sit comfortably.
Larger dive watches, pilot’s watches and chronographs can look perfectly balanced on a bigger wrist, provided the proportions are right.
Again, don’t focus solely on the case size.
A well-designed 42mm watch can often wear smaller than a chunky 40mm diver with long lugs.
Watch trends have changed
If you’d bought a luxury watch in the early 2000s, bigger almost always meant better.
Brands were producing 44mm, 46mm and even 48mm cases as oversized watches became the trend.
Today, things look very different.
Collectors are moving back towards wearable proportions. Watches between 38mm and 40mm have become incredibly popular, offering a balance between vintage charm and modern practicality.
It’s proof that watch trends, like fashion, always come full circle.
Don’t buy a watch because everyone else is
This is probably the biggest mistake I see.
Someone reads online that a particular watch is the “perfect size” and immediately assumes it will suit them.
It might.
It might not.
Every wrist is different.
Your build, your style and even the way you wear your watch all play a part. Some people like a watch to sit neatly under a shirt cuff. Others prefer a little more wrist presence.
Neither is right.
It’s simply personal preference.
Some watches wear differently than you’d expect
This is something that often surprises first-time buyers.
Take the Omega Seamaster Professional.
On paper, 42mm might sound quite large.
On the wrist, it feels remarkably balanced thanks to its curved lugs and relatively compact proportions.
The same applies to many Rolex, Tudor and TAG Heuer models.
Numbers only tell part of the story.
The design does the rest.
So… what size should you buy?
If I had to give one piece of advice, it would be this.
Don’t buy the size that’s fashionable.
Buy the size you’ll still enjoy wearing in ten years.
Watch trends come and go.
